Music

Intent

Music is a fantastic way for you to be creative. Through different genres and styles of music, you can not only find a style of music that you find enjoyable to listen to or perform but you can also learn about other fascinating countries and cultures. It gives you the chance to experiment with sound, to appreciate feelings you can hear and give you the confidence to share your ideas. Music is a part of all of our lives, whether it be playing a musical instrument, singing or simply enjoying the listening experience. Simply put, it is good for the soul and is fantastic for helping to boost your mental health.

Implementation

At St. Walburga’s Catholic Primary School, we encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. We offer a bespoke curriculum that carefully considers the cultural capital and reflects on the diversity of our learners. As well as using Charanga, our learners benefit from the expertise and knowledge of both the West Yorkshire Music Hub and the Diocese of Leeds Music.

  • Our fluid curriculum encompasses units that focus on a range of musical concepts including singing, composing and performing. These key concepts are woven throughout our learners’ curriculum from Early Years up to Year 6. Learning journeys provide each unit with an overarching question, ensuring that children have an in-depth understanding of how their learning is both relevant and enriching.
  • Skills are at the heart of our music curriculum, and children’s learning is structured around the revisiting of these skills regularly to ensure that they are embedded. To aid this, vocabulary plays an important role and this is built upon as children progress through school, which also aids our learner’s retention of key ideas.
  • Adaptive teaching allows all children to be stretched and challenged in an appropriate manner.
  • We offer a vast amount of enrichment opportunities to all of our learners. These include the use of specialised recorder, ukulele and singing teachers, as well as further opportunities to practise skills through the use of extra-curricular music clubs, peripatetic music lessons and choir.

Impact

Our Music lessons are engaging, exciting and full of great depth in learning. Children study and have exposure to a wide range of musical styles and genres, which also provide the opportunity to link music into other subjects to develop their understanding and awareness of the world around them. Learning about other cultures is vital, and music offers an excellent gateway to this. Through a combination of explicit music lessons, choir sessions, hymns practice and music clubs, children have the opportunity to improve upon their musical skills and partake in the performance of music. Music is about creativity and it is evident, through the variety of shows and performances that our children take part in, that their creativity and enthusiasm is able to flourish through the use of music.
