Physical Education
Intent
PE inspires you to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for you to become physically confident in a way which supports your health and fitness now, and in your future life. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness, discipline and respect. It also promotes good mental health and boosts your performance in the classroom too.
Implementation
At St. Walburga’s, we recognise the difference that physical education can make to the pupils in our school. We strive to maintain health and fitness throughout the academic year through a range of sporting activities where pupils will have the opportunity to express their passion for PE and improve their skills and knowledge. We have an assortment of facilities within school including sports equipment and indoor apparatus which can be used during our lessons. Over time, children will work both independently and in groups, learning the importance of staying active. Our curriculum is adapted from PE Hub to support the cultural capital and reflect the diversity of our learners.
- Our curriculum is structured to aid the development of skills throughout our learners’ primary school journey. Children in Key Stage 1 take part in two half-termly units that are skills focused with certain sports used to aid these skills - for example, using Cricket-based activities in their ‘Attack, Defend, Shoot’ unit in Year 2. In Key Stage 2, children continue to revisit and embed these skills through sport-specific units. In Key Stage 2, skills are taught explicitly through a wide range of sports.
- Learning journeys give our children a clear vision of their learning across each unit, and ensure that skills are built on week-by-week and in a way that enables competitive gamesmanship.
- Skills, knowledge and vocabulary are revisited often to ensure that knowledge is retained, knowledge is built upon and skills are embedded.
- All children are stretched and challenged in an appropriate manner through the use of adaptive teaching.
- Children are provided with a wide range of enrichment opportunities. These include sporting competitions at school, Trust and district levels, as well as extra-curricular clubs and visitors - including professional athletes who have competed at the Commonwealth Games.
Impact
At St Walburga’s Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities.
All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom.
Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise.
We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, which they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school.
All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson.
Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed our school values.
