Safer Internet Day
At the beginning of February, we all celebrate Safer Internet Day. This is a day where the world turns its attention to keeping safe online. The theme this year was: 'Want to talk about it? Making conversations about life online...' and all the classes took part in different activities across the day, culminating in Key Stage assemblies to share the work completed and to discuss being online.
In Foundation Stage, the children discussed what they like doing online. Their favourite activity was watching television and films online, with their least favourite being finding information. They used the opportunity to discuss how to keep themselves safe if they were playing games that have the opportunity to speak to people.
In Key Stage 1, the children created posters about keeping themselves safe on the internet and recognised the need to speak to an adult if they felt unsafe.
In Lower Key Stage 2, the children considered how different scenarios of things that may happen online might make them feel, e.g. being angry at rude comments seen online or feeling accomplished when completing a level in a difficult game. They also played ‘This’ or ‘That’
In Upper Key Stage 2, the children created their own Safer Internet Day Youth Charters, where they recognised how different stakeholders on the internet (such as the Government, the industry, teachers, parents and themselves) could help to fulfil their proposition and show they are listening to what children and young people have to say.
The day was a great success. We will continue to discuss online safety in other areas of the curriculum. We encourage you to both monitor and speak to your own children at home. If you need any support with online issues, please speak to Mrs Fearnley.
